When the Club was organized on November 1, 1920, its charter members adopted the principle that the membership should be limited in total number and maintained by careful selection of persons, recommended and sponsored by members of the Club. That principle has never been abandoned.

It has been a traditional policy of the Club to make the membership representative of all professions and businesses.

Since its inception, the Mercury Club has had many members serve as Presidents, Directors, and Trustees of most civic and cultural institutions in the Kansas City area.
